Youth |
The youth ministry is designed to utilize three different spheres - social activity, mission endeavors, and spiritual growth.
Social Activity: First and foremost, the program is designed to be fun. We seek for the youth a joyous time together where they are able to learn social skills, develop relationships, and polish their ethics. For social recreation, the youth go backpacking, camping, cycling, and rafting.
Mission Endeavors: We also involve the youth in monthly mission activities where they reach beyond ethnic and class boundaries. On a regular basis, they feed the homeless, support an afro-centric drug rehabilitation program, make pastoral visits to people in the hospital, and support those who are homebound. They have also helped build a porch and playground for a children's center in Florida, and have built a two-story room addition for a family in Southeastern Kentucky.
Spiritual Growth: Central to our reason of relationship, our youth ministry is designed to nourish faith development through church school, Wednesday night scriptural discussions, and Sunday night "More." The youth also participate in retreats that are exclusively spiritual, and plans are being made for a spiritual pilgrimage to the ancient Iona Abbey in Scotland. The Youth Committee works with the Minister to Students in an effort to make our youth ministry a well rounded reflection of the life of Christ.

Youth Church School: (Undercroft)
As Christians, we are challenged to grow in our faith and action. During our church school time this year, we will be working together to implement spiritual formation practices into our daily lives to become better disciples of Christ. As a group, we will engage is discussion on life issues, Biblical lessons, and explore discipleship practices. Each month will center around a spiritual formation theme and will include an action unit where we get a chance to put our learning into action as a youth community. Examples of action units for this year include a visit to a monastery, a fall retreat, mission service projects, and developing a prayer room. Just bring yourself, your Bible, a journal, and an open spirit.
The youth café, Undergrounds, will be open for a light breakfast at 9:30 AM each Sunday. Church School in the newly renovated youth space will begin at 9:45 AM.
